André Cognard Shihan, 8th Dan
In his childhood, Cognard Shihan trained in judo, aikido and karatedo. When he was 17 years old he began teaching aikido to adults and at the age of 21 years he received the French state diploma for teaching judo, aikido, karatedo and kendo.
In 1973 André Cognard met Kobayashi Hirokazu Sensei, a direct disciple of O Sensei (Kobayashi Sensei started at Hombu Dojo in 1946). After twenty-five years of practice under Kobayashi Sensei, Cognard Shihan was designated Kobayashi Shihan’s successor as head of the Kokusai Aikido Kenshukai Kobayashi Hirokazu Ryu Ha.
The Académie d'Autonome Aikido was founded by Cognard Shihan in 1982, where aikido is taught by traditional means, ethically based on a respect for the individual, and with theoretical support from psychology, philosophy, and western and eastern medicine. He resides at Bourg Argental in France, where he has operated his current main Dojo, the Kobayashi Hirokazu Kinen Aikidojo, since 2003.
Cognard Shihan is also one of the highest-ranking representatives of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai: the title of Hanshi was bestowed upon him in April 2012, at the Fourth World Butoku Sai held at the Butokuden in Kyoto, Japan.
